Dolichopodidae insect inclusion in Baltic Amber

Members of the Dolichopodidae family of insects included in fossilised baltic Amber.

Dolichopodidae is a family under the order Diptera - Dolichopodidae are more commonly referred to as the "long-legged flies".

The Amber found in the Baltic sea region is thought to date from the Eocene in age - although the exact age is somewhat argued upon in the scientific community - it is probably best to simply state that it is 'around 40 million years old'.

Magnification will be required for this, as with all amber inclusions - they are on a very, very small scale.

We currently have a single piece in stock:

#1 - 9.35x6x4.6MM - an exceptional, if small specimen. Quite a rounded piece, almost like a little tumblestone rather than a flat slice. Despite its small stature, this piece has a rather stand out inclusion. While a lot of the fly is shrouded in bubbles of gas (likely a result of decomposition), the wings, hairy legs, and especially those absolutely tremendous compound eyes remain very visible - although magnification is required of course.
