Radioactive Apatite for geiger counter testing

Low grade pieces of tumbled Apatite, ideal for geiger counter tests.

These were rather low quality tumblestones with lots of iron staining and frankly poor colour; the best use for them really is for testing geiger counters.

They are weakly radioactive, making them a decently priced and reasonably safe method of testing sensitive radioactivity counters. Please note the weakly bit - they aren't going to be setting off any old meters that read in R/hr... if you ever see that needle move, run like hell.

A randomly selected 100g lot was four pieces, and measured in at 0.64usv/hr on my radiacode2. The highest rate I saw was around 35CPS.

A good sample, handy for comparing against my

A good product, well prepared and just as advertised. I am fortunate to have a GMC 600+ that measures alpha, beta, gamma and X-rays. So my results might be a bit higher. The contact dose on the pack of 4 polished apatite samples. Collectively about 1.8microSv/hr, mostly alpha from Th or U. At >10cm the signal dropped to 0.3uSv/hr, background is ,~0.2uSv/hr. Individually each were around the 0.8uSv/hr on contact. Just goes to show where thorium and or uranium can be found in our minerals. These are cracking examples of apatite.
