Synthetic Amber - acrylic and resin beads
To be perfectly clear and upfront - these are beads made from various kinds of plastics, resins, acrylics, etc.
They are intended to resemble amber - and to find quality real amber beads like this would be really quite expensive, so using plastic can sometimes be a good alternative.
When I was a reenactor we struggled to find any large synthetic 'amber' beads in a large size, and as we often did public pass arounds, it was unfortunately not realistic to use real amber or jet etc as items would sometimes be lost.
We currently have two types in stock:
- Pumpkin beads - these are round but ribbed, kind of like a pumpkin. They seem to be called 'melon beads' by some other stores, but... no, these are pumpkin shaped. They are similar to some Romano-British archaeological finds, and some Scandinavian iron age finds.
- Round beads - nice little round plastic beads - the holes are 1.5-2MM on these. Similar to various historic beads, but they are perfectly round so not too 'authentic'.
