The Benallt mine was opened in 1886 and worked until 1894, when it was abandoned. It was then worked again from 1904 to 1914 as the Benallt No 2 mine.
It was again reopened in 1939 for the war effort, worked alongside the Rhiw Mine and Tyddyn Meirion and Ty Canol mines.
As such, there are a few names that specimens from this site could be known under and minerals from the locale technically could be from sites a mile or more away if collected from spoilheaps.
Mindat lists 36 minerals from the site, and of particular interest should be the quality specimens of celsian and paracelsian found here.
The site is also the type locality for four minerals – banalsite, bannisterite, cymrite, and pennantite.
