Ecton Mine

Ecton, Wetton, Staffordshire Moorlands, Staffordshire, England, UK

A mine exploiting copper deposits on Ecton Hill. This one is also referred to as ‘Deep Ecton Mine’ or ‘Deep Ecton Pipe’.

Deposits on Ecton Hill were worked since the Bronze Age, albeit not continuously.

Deep Ecton was allowed to flood in the 1850s, and all mining on the hill ended in the 1890s.

The whole site is now a SSSI and the Ecton Mine is an underground SSSI.

The mine is now owned by EMET – the Ecton Mine Educational Trust, which provides the opportunities for schools and universities to run geology field work and research projects.

Mindat lists 11 minerals from the site, primarily copper minerals.
