East Roman Gravels Mine

Worthen with Shelve, Shropshire, England, UK

A historic lead mine, operated between sometime in the 1700s and 1883.

The site was part of a sett of mines which the Shropshire HER calls Batholes sett; this group of mines includes:

  • Battholes Mine
  • East Roman Gravels Mine (aka Wood Mine, Wood Gravels Mine, Hope Valley Mine, Upper Batholes Mine, West Tankerville Mine, Valley Mine)

It does not seem to have included Roman Gravels Mine – another mine a short distance to the SSE.

All of the specimens I have seen from this site are from the former collection of Roger Harker, and were labelled as being from 13th century lead slags – they are all secondary lead and zinc minerals.

They are presumably from a former smelter slag locality on the site of the mine – or possibly somewhere between the ERG and RG sites. The dates do seem to be from before activity on the site though, so it is possible the dates are simply incorrect.
