Boulby Mine

Loftus, Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England, UK

Boulby Mine is an underground mine worked for polyhalite, rock salt, and potash.

Boulby Mine is one of Britain’s deepest mines at 1400 meters. The site is actually so deep it is the site of Boulby Underground Laboratory, 1100m / 3600ft below the surface. The site is used for various deep underground studies I don’t fully understand.

The site produces a range of interesting minerals – typically evaporate minerals, but particular highlight should be given to the boracite and trembathite from the site. Obviously, halite, sylvite and polyhalite are common from the site.
