Breedon Hill Quarry
Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire, England
Breedon Quarry sits on Breedon Hill, next to the small village of Breedon on the Hill.
The quarry itself is an aggregate quarry which produces some Calcite and Sphalerite, and occasionally chalcopyrite and other copper ores.
I live reasonably close to this locale, and it is one of my favourite English placenames.
Numerous languages collide here; in brythonic or celtic, ‘bre’, ‘bryn’, or ‘brí’ means ‘hill’. In old English and Gaelic, ‘dun’, ‘dún’ both mean hill. So – there’s a good chance ‘Breedon on the Hill’ means ‘HillHill on the Hill’.
Minerals found at this site include baryte, calcite, chalcopyrite, galena, malachite, sphalerite, and wulfenite.
There is a short history of the quarry at the ‘Special Aggregates’ link below.
