Charmouth Beach
Charmouth, West Dorset, Dorset, England, UK
Charmouth Beach is, rather surprisingly, the beach nearest to Charmouth. It is well known amongst mineral and fossil collectors.
The most common minerals found on the beach are baryte, calcite, and pyrite.
However, the site is probably best known for its fossils – ammonites, crinoids, belemnites and more. Pyritised Ammonites and Crinoids from the site are some of the best known from the Jurassic Coast and can be found all around Charmouth.
The cliffs around Charmouth are dangerous and frequently experience rock and mud falls. While collecting is allowed, visitors should be mindful of the dangers of the site and follow the rules – no hammering on the cliffs or bedrock being one of the main ones!
