Devon Great Consols

Gulworthy, West Devon, Devon, England, UK

Devon Great Consols is a series of combined mines on the banks of the Tamar.

Devon Great Consols was a large arsenic and copper mine primarily worked between 1844 and 1902. During World War I the mine was reopened for a time, to mine arsenic, tin, and tungsten.

Various mines are included as part of the shared workings, including:

  • Watson’s Mine
  • Wheal Anna Maria
  • Wheal Emma
  • Wheal Fanny
  • Wheal Frementor,
  • Wheal Josiah
  • Wheal Maria

Many specimens from the site are simply labelled as ‘Devon Great Consols’, though – presumably as they were collected from shared dumpsites.

The mine may also be known as ‘North Bedford Mines’.

The site is now part of a world heritage site, and is partially a scheduled monument, with various listed buildings, etc. The land around the site is still heavily contaminated with lead and arsenic.

There are several excellent writeups of the site below – especially the Scottish Geology Trust and the Open University Geological Society.
