Whitfield Brow Mines

Stanhope, County Durham, England, UK

A former lead mine near Frosterley which produced various lead minerals.

There isn’t much information on this site available online unfortunately.

We do have some information on who it was owned by, and thus potential periods when it may have been worked.

  • 1874 – 1902 London Lead Company
  • 1903 – 1909 Church Commissioners (Lessors)
  • 1914 – 1916 Greenwell & Bell

The owners information here (from the Buddlepit website linked below) appears to match up quite well with the output information (from the DMM website linked below).

The DMM data suggests the mine was worked between 1882 and 1902, and then again in 1915. It is possible the site was closed due to manpower shortages during WWI.
