Burtree Pasture Mine

Cowshill, Stanhope, County Durham, England, UK

A historic lead and fluorite mine operated between the 1870s and 1980s.

The mine produced a significant amount of lead, and was reopened in the 1970s to find fluorite – apparently, there was little success in this endeavour and it closed soon afterwards.

Few minerals are known from the site – fluorite, galena, quartz, siderite, and sphalerite.

There is a good writeup of the site on the Heritage Gateway site below, which is well worth a read and lists many of the hushes and veins known from Burtree.
