Kahlenberg

Oberstadtfeld, Daun, Vulkaneifel, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Kahlenberg is a quarry working basalt, known amongst collectors of micro mineral specimens.

Kahlenberg is, perhaps, a little bit of a confusing locale, as it may have several other names.

This locale is called ‘Kahlenberg Quarry’, but was also known as ‘Auf’m Kopp’. I have found several specimens from this site labelled as Auf’m Kopp.

It may also be known as ‘Schlackenkegel der Höhe 636 südöstlich Neroth’ – ‘cinder cone of height 636 southeast of Neroth‘. More recently, it is known as ‘Lavasandtagebau Oberstadtfeld 9’.

There are also quite a few other locales called Kahlenberg or variants thereof; including another within the Eifel.

Ideally, the full geographical address of the locale should be used; Kahlenberg, Oberstadtfeld, Daun, Vulkaneifel, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany – or, if limited on space, ‘Kahlenberg (Auf’m Kopp)’.

Mindat lists 34 mineral species from the site, including one for which it is the type locality. I suspect collectors will be most interested in the quality micros of Volborthite that were found at the site, though.
