Thier des Carrières
Cahay, Vielsalm, Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium
Thier des Carrières is a former slate and whetstone quarry near Vielsalm, now in a protected nature reserve.
Showing the single result
The site originally produced slate and the whetstones known as ‘Ardennes Coticule’, which are still hugely well regarded.
A wide range of interesting minerals were found at the site – mindat lists nearly 90 species, especially of copper and aluminium minerals.
One of the highlights for me are gemmy aqua-blue balls of crystalline Turquoise, which, while very small, are very nice.
The site is a protected nature reserve, with some rare moss and lichen species represented. Bats are also present on the site. No further collecting is allowed, and it is unlikely this will change.
