Pottsville Formation
The Pottsville Formation is a large bedrock unit covering parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, and Alabama.

The formation dates to the early to middle Pennsylvanian period.
The Broad Top basin in Pennsylvania produces fossils of marine invertebrates and plant fossils from the middle Morrowan age – which is likely what brings you to this page.
The most well known fossils for collectors will likely be the Alethopteris ferns from the site, which are a mineralised white colour against a black shale matrix, creating contrasting fossils popular amongst collectors.
