Heimberg Quarry

Wolfshagen, Harz, Lower Saxony, Germany

Heimberg Quarry is a former dolerite quarry closed since 1987, which is now at least partially flooded and is left as a nature reserve.

While the quarry did provide dolerite as an aggregate, it also provided a range of minerals, including aragonite, calcite, chalcopyrite, gersdorffite, pararammelsbergite, quartz, and siderite.

It is quite an attractive location, with an ‘inselberg’, or ‘island mountain’ rising from the rock to form an unusual central plateau.

Nowadays it seems to be quite popular with hikers in the area – see the ‘komoot’ page below for some great photos of the quarry and the inselberg.
