Anna Mine

Alsdorf, Aachen, Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Anna Mine, or Grube Anna, is a former coal mine and associated dumps which produced some uncommon anthropogenic minerals.

Some of the minerals produced at this site (or, more specifically, the dumps) are the direct result of the combustion of the Anna I dump, which self ignited in the 1950s.

There are a number of ways this has caused the formation of new minerals, including some very complex processes, sometimes comparable to volcanic fumaroles.

As far as I can tell the dump is still thought to be burning as of 2014, 2015 ish.

The site is well known amongst European micro mineral collectors and systematic mineral collectors for the rare specimens that were found.

Mindat lists 70 minerals from the site, although many are from the dumps themselves.
