Information about Ocean Jasper

Ocean Jasper is a unique, multicolored variety of orbicular jasper, characterized by its circular patterns (orbs), wavy bands, and vibrant colours.

It is typically found in shades of green, yellow, pink, white, red, orange, and brown, often with a mix of colors in one specimen.

The patterns resemble bubbles, swirls, or waves, giving the stone a striking and artistic look. This stone is commonly polished into cabochons, spheres, or decorative carvings to enhance the patterns.

Uses and History

Ocean Jasper is mainly used in jewellery, carvings, and decorative objects. Due to its vibrant patterns, it is a popular choice for pendants, beads, and tumbled stones.

Ocean Jasper was first officially discovered in Madagascar in 1999, though some specimens may have been collected earlier.

The deposits are located along the coast and are only accessible during low tide, making mining difficult. This rarity and the difficulty in obtaining it contribute to its high value.

The stone quickly gained popularity in the gem and mineral market due to its distinctive orbs and colourful patterns.

Other orbicular jaspers or rhyolites may be sold as ocean jasper.

Hazards and Warnings

Mineral collectors should wash their hands after handling specimens, to avoid any exposure to potential toxins.

Almost all rocks, minerals (and, frankly, almost all other substances on earth) can produce toxic dust when cutting, which can cause serious respiratory conditions including silicosis.

When cutting or polishing rocks, minerals, shells, etc, all work should be done wet to minimise the dust, and a suitable respirator or extraction system should be used.
