Sphalerite and Pyrite from Great South Tolgus, Tarewaste, Redruth, Cornwall, England, UK
Specimens consisting of a combination of sphalerite and pyrite from the Great South Tolgus, or Great South Wheal Tolgus mine.
This is now abandoned, but between 1854 and 1869 the mine produced 16,500 tons of copper ore and around 100 tons of black tin.
The single specimen I have isn't much to look at at first glance - it looks like a large piece of rusty iron ore. Looking closer, you can see some small sphalerite crystals and an area of chalcopyrite too.
