Green river formation plant fossils

Unidentified plant fossils from the famous Green River formation, a 'lagerstätte' spanning areas of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. In this case, the pieces are from Bonanza, Utah, USA.

A lagerstätte refers to an area of sedimentary rock with an exceptional level of preservation, in which uncommon fossils can be found - such as fossils with soft tissue preservation, leaves, flies, insects - and larger animals too.

Probably the most well known fossils from the Green River Formation are the fossil fish 'Knightia', sold worldwide in museum gift shops. However, there is a huge range of fossils to be found in the formation.

These are all plant fossils, typically leaves and seedpods, which have not been identified as any particular species.

The preservation of these pieces is reasonable and would add a nice specimen for any beginner or budding fossil collector.

The matrix stone around the fossils measures approximately 30-50MM wide in most of these pieces, and the fossils themselves are typically 15-30MM in length. There is usually only one fossil on each piece.

You'll receive a randomly picked piece from our stock - as a budget item I'm afraid I can't take a photograph of each individual specimen.
