Ocotea coloradensis leaf fossils

Fine fossilised specimens of Ocotea coloradensis leaves from the Green River Formation of Utah, USA.

These come from the Eocene, around 50 million years ago. Ocotea is the genus which contains the modern day laurel tree, which this fossil does closely resemble.

The Green River Formation currently has around 60 known plant species, which are often very very similar in appearance. It is also known for finely preserved fish and insect fossils.

We currently only have a single one of these in stock:

  • #1 - 125.4x80.4x21.5MM - this specimen consists of a single, well preserved leaf missing its tip. It was broken in extraction and has been repaired - the repair is actually not especially obvious from the front but is clear on the back. It also contains a small unidentified insect. Matrix measures 125.4x80.4x21.5MM - leaf is approximately 93x32MM at its widest and longest points.
