The site was opened in 1837 as an underground mine called the ‘Longfellow Mine’, and was later converted into an open-pit working in 1937.

While the site primarily produces copper and molybdenum, other ore minerals are found here, including gold and silver. Some rare earth minerals and garnets are found here too.
