Turkey is a mineral-rich country that has long been important for its mining and mineral heritage. Its diverse geology has yielded a range of fine mineral specimens.

Borate minerals are perhaps the best-known export from Turkey. The country has some of the world’s largest reserves of boron and produces species such as colemanite, ulexite, and boracite from places like Bigadiç and Kırka. These often form attractive, well-crystallised specimens.

Stibnite is another mineral of note, with sharp, metallic crystals found in the old mining areas of western Turkey. The country has a long tradition of antimony mining.

Obsidian is found across Turkey’s volcanic regions, especially around Cappadocia. Its sharp, glass-like fragments were used for tools in ancient times, and its deep black or reddish-brown colours make it popular with modern mineral collectors.

Zircon, diopside, and vesuvianite can be found in skarn and metamorphic environments, making for fine mineral specimens. The Çine area is well known for garnet and epidote as well.

Although better known for its gemstones like turquoise and meerschaum, Turkey has a surprising mineral diversity, making it an intriguing area for mineral collecting.

It is the type locality for 14 minerals, including Almandine Garnet.
