Nigeria does not have many widely known fossiliferous formations, and it is not often cited in palaeontological literature compared to other parts of Africa. However, there are a few notable exceptions.
The Ameki Formation, located in southeastern Nigeria, is Eocene in age and one of the country’s most fossil-rich geological units. It primarily consists of sandstone and shale and has produced fossils of mammals, reptiles, birds and turtles.
The preservation tends to be good, although the material is rarely seen outside academic collections.
Fossil collecting and research in Nigeria remains relatively limited, but the country does hold potential for further discoveries.
