Information about Stilbite

Stilbite is a group of minerals containing two members – Stilbite-Ca and Stilbite-Na. When the minerals are unanalysed, they are typically referred to simply as ‘stilbite’. Stilbite-Ca is the most common of the two minerals.

Stilbite is a mineral that is usually found in a pale peach or pink color. It is made up of aluminum, silicon, oxygen, and water molecules. Stilbite is found in volcanic rocks and is often associated with other minerals such as zeolites, calcite, and quartz.

Uses and History

Stilbite is a popular mineral among collectors due to its beauty and abundance in zeolite-rich deposits. It is commonly used in lapidary work for ornamental carvings and small jewelry pieces. Stilbite also has industrial significance as a natural zeolite. Zeolites, including stilbite, are valued for their porous structures.

Stilbite was first described in the 18th century. Its name is derived from the Greek word stilbein, meaning “to shine,” a reference to its pearly or vitreous luster.

Hazards and Warnings

Mineral collectors should wash their hands after handling specimens, to avoid any exposure to potential toxins.

Almost all rocks, minerals (and, frankly, almost all other substances on earth) can produce toxic dust when cutting, which can cause serious respiratory conditions including silicosis.

When cutting or polishing rocks, minerals, shells, etc, all work should be done wet to minimise the dust, and a suitable respirator or extraction system should be used.
