Fluorite is quite popular in modern jewellery for its standout striped appearance and bright colours; however, it is not the ideal jewellery stone. Fluorite only measures 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning it is relatively easy to scratch.

This means ideally any jeweller looking to use Fluorite should be considering a piece that will be kept away from anything scratchy – so no rings, and perhaps not bracelets either.

Extra care should be taken to design a setting that protects the stone from scratches, which can be tricky. This is especially important for cabochons and faceted stones, where any scratches will be immediately obvious.

Fluorite is probably best used for earrings or pendants, out of ‘harms way’.
