Molybdenite specimens
Molybdenite is a uncommon black to gun-metal grey mineral which is found in a range of countries including Australia, Canada, Norway and the USA.
It is primarily used in industry as an ore for the metallic element Molybdenum, which is then typically used in creating strong steel alloys.
Crystalline molybdenite is quite popular with element collectors and micromount collectors, as the crystals it produces, while rather small, can be very well presented.
Our current stock consists of:
- Small pieces of molybdenite in matrix, from Buskerud, Norway. The metallic molybdenite is very visible in contrast to the rock around it.
It’s difficult to demonstrate the natural variety that can occur in minerals.
Different locales have a different mineral makeup, different methods of formation, different inclusions – this can contribute to considerable differences in colour, size, the internal inclusions, clarity, etc. I am trying to add photographs that compare any differences between locales, grades, etc.
