Ferberite mineral specimens
Ferberite is an iron-rich member of the wolframite / tungstate group with the chemical formula FeWO4. It is a black or dark brown mineral that contains iron and tungsten.
Ferberite has been found in many countries around the world, including Bolivia, Peru, Portugal, and China. It is often used as a heavy mineral concentrate in mining and mineral processing. Ferberite is named after the German mineralogist Moritz Rudolf Ferber, who discovered the mineral in 1860.
Our current stocks include:
- #1 - 45.5x22.2x15.3MM - 59.7g - from an old collection, this mineral was originally labelled Wolframite from the renowned locale Panasqueira Mines, Covilhã, Portugal. The specimens from this site were later found to be almost entirely Ferberite. This specimen is supplied in the original mislabelled box, which is rather tatty but I feel forms part of the story of this mineral, especially as Wolframite is far more well known.
- #2 - 32.2x22.9x13.2MM - 11.3g - Ferberite, calcite and mica, a lovely specimen from Panasqueira Mines, Covilhã, Portugal. Mounted in a small plastic box, ready for display. Fantastic thumbnail specimen.
