Bog Iron Specimens from Leicestershire, UK
Small Bog Iron specimens from Leicestershire. These pieces were dredged from the River Soar, and are all quite small - they are also very river rounded. The pieces typically measure around 10-20MM long each and are attracted to powerful magnets.
Bog Iron was the primary form of Iron ore used in the Anglo Saxon and Viking periods. It typically forms in moorland and is technically a renewable resource.
