Sterling Mine is often linked in collections with the relatively nearby Franklin Mine, also well known for fluorescent minerals.
Mindat lists nearly 250 species of mineral from the site, including 20 for which it is the type locality.
The site produces a wide range of extremely bright fluorescent minerals, as well as fine crystalline mineral specimens of other kinds.
The zinc mine itself closed in 1986, but reopened as a museum in 1989.
The site allows paid digging for minerals in their dumps, which produce a vast amount of mineral specimens, especially small fluorescent pieces.
