Aris Quarries

Aris, Windhoek Rural, Khomas Region, Namibia

A pair of Phonolite quarries, the Ariskop Quarry and the Railway Quarry, less than 1km apart.

The quarries produce a huge range of minerals, many of which are rather uncommon. Mindat lists 121 minerals from the site, 6 of which it is the type locality for – arisite-Ce, arisite-La, ellingsenite, escheite, sazhinite-La, and windhoekite.

Most of the minerals came from the workings of the Ariskop quarry, but it seems they are worked in unison and labelling tends to just mark them as the Aris quarries.

The site will be of especial interest to micromineral collectors and systematic mineral collectors due to the large amount of uncommon minerals found here.
