Different locations are listed by Mindat and Buddlepit, although they are at least close to Wanlockhead.
The 1915 maps accessible via the National Library of Scotland site unfortunately simply list each as ‘Old Shaft’.
It seems Straitsteps is a vein running roughly north-south, just to the west of Wanlockhead.
In order from North to South, we have:
- Bay Lead Mine – Straitstep Vein
- Waygate Lead Mine Shaft – Straitstep Vein
- Straitsteps Vein Mine Shaft
- Margaret’s Lead Mine Shaft – Straitstep Vein
It’s possible specimens labelled “Straitstep Mine” may be from any of these locales, and it may be best to relabel them as “Straitstep Vein”.
