Profunda Mine

Cármenes, León, Castile and Leon, Spain

Profunda is a locale worked since Roman times until the end of the 20th century.

Mindat lists 17 minerals, including aragonite, azurite, chalcocite, erythrite, malachite, tyrolite and zeunerite; there are various copper ore species found at the locale.

The Profunda mine was operated constantly between 1860 and 1880, then intermittently until the 1930s. A smelter was installed during the 1920s, but was destroyed during the Spanish civil war of the 1930s; mining never really restarted after that.

The company SIEMCALSA has more recently started exploration at the site conducting various drills and assays, finding various grades of ore containing copper, cobalt, nickel, uranium, and zinc, including some high grade copper ore averaging 10.3%.

Whether or not the site will be reopened I don’t know – I suppose we’ll find out in time!
