Panasqueira Mines

The mining region referred to as Panasqueira Mines covers a large area of around 20km².

It produces a wide range of materials including copper, silver, tungsten, and tin – as well as a wide range of mineral specimens.

Mindat lists 88 minerals from the site, as well as two for which the site is the type locality – Panasqueiraite and Thadeuite.

Among the mineral species there are numerous uncommon or rare minerals, and the mines produce some phenomenal specimens, particularly of arsenopyrite, cassiterite, ferberite, fluor-apatite, and marcasite.

The mines are primarily known for their tungsten production, and have been in almost continuous operation since 1901. At the height of the second world war, the mine was employing over ten thousand people for the extraction of wolframite and production of tungsten.
