Aquia District, Bolognesi Province, Ancash, Peru

Pachapaqui mining district is a collection of shafts and mines exploiting various lodes of zinc, silver, lead, and copper and producing a range of fine mineral specimens.

Pieces are sometimes cited as ‘Pachapaqui Mine’, but the site consists of a huge amount of individual mines, and it is often impossible to narrow down to a more specific locale. I haven’t actually seen a specimen claiming to be from a specific mine ‘in’ this locale, yet – it seems Pachapaqui mining district is the accepted name overall.

Mindat lists thirty mineral species from the site, including fine specimens of Axinite-Mn, Bournonite, Chalcopyrite, Galena, Helvine, Pyrite, Rhodochrosite, Rhodonite, Sphalerite and Tetrahedrite.

This locale does produce some excellent lustrous metallic minerals which can command high prices.

The full mining district currently occupies a site approximately 18×9 kilometers in size, at an elevation between 3800 to 4500 meters. Modern mining began here in 1949.
