Uruguay is best known for its spectacular mineral finds, especially its amethyst and agate from the basalt flows of the Artigas and Salto departments. These volcanic geodes can be huge, with deep purple amethyst and beautifully banded agate making them highly sought after by collectors and jewellers.

The amethyst from the Artigas area is particularly prized for its rich colour and large crystal points. Its quality is comparable to that found in Brazil, making it a popular choice for mineral buyers.

Uruguay is also well known for its carnelian, jasper, and calcite, which often occur within the basalt cavities. Occasionally, rare minerals such as gypsum and goethite can be found associated with these volcanic environments.

While mineral mining in Uruguay is largely centred around decorative and lapidary material, it has earned a strong reputation for its beautiful and abundant amethyst and agate. Its mineral heritage is a reminder of the country’s rich volcanic past.
