Minerals from Slovakia
Our range of minerals from Slovakia.
Slovakia has a long and varied history of mining and produces a range of mineral specimens, especially ore minerals.
Slovakia has a long mining history, particularly for silver, gold, and base metals, with many classic localities well known among European collectors.
The most famous mining area is Banská Štiavnica, part of the old central Slovakian ore field. It has produced a wide variety of sulphide minerals, including galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and tetrahedrite. Fine examples of native silver and silver-bearing minerals have also been found here. Some of the older specimens from this area are historically significant and can be seen in museum collections.
Kremnica is another historic mining centre, primarily known for gold and silver. Quartz crystals from this region are often associated with visible gold inclusions, though most of the high-grade material has long since been mined out.
Slovakia has also produced attractive baryte, fluorite, and calcite specimens, particularly from smaller workings and quarries. Aragonite and gypsum can also be found, typically in the western part of the country.
Dobšiná was once a noted locality for cobalt minerals, including skutterudite and safflorite, though specimens from here are now rare.
Older specimens may be labelled “Hungary” or “Austro-Hungary,” as many were collected before Slovakia became an independent nation. Labelling can sometimes be inconsistent for this reason.
Mindat lists 34 minerals of which Slovakia is the type locality, but many of these are rare minerals primarily of interest to systematic collectors.
