Mining contributes less than 1% of Honduras GDP

As of 2022, Honduras has banned open pit mining.

It appears extraction of gold and other minerals has continued, often illegally, and has been causing many issues with pollution.

For mineral collectors, probably the best known specimen from Honduras is, in fact, not a mineral but a mineraloid. The volcanic black Opal from Honduras is rather well known both as specimens and sometimes cut for jewellery usage too.

Most of this opal is part of a dark black matrix with pin pricks of coloured fire.
