Leonie I Mine

Leonie I mine is an abandoned iron mine in Germany, also known as Grube Leonie I, Eisenerzbergwerk Leonie, or Grube Alte Leonie in German.

Leonie I is part of a mine complex exploiting the Auerbach iron deposit. The Leonie shaft was dug in 1972 and closed in 1987. In 1996, it became a nature reserve with little to be seen on the surface other than the headframe of the mine.

The ‘Showcaves’ article linked below has a good history of the site – Mindat does have a written history of the site but the dates are all over the place and seem inaccurate.

Minerals once found at the site include baryte, rhodochrosite, rockbridgeite, siderite and wavellite.
