Kremnica is a town in central Slovakia, with an associated gold-silver deposit and the oldest still active mint in the world.

During the medieval periods, and even to more recent dates, Kremnica was one of the most important mining towns in the world.

The town was first granted town privileges by King Charles I of Hungary – at this point its mint was already in operation, producing ducats and florins.

The last cost effective gold was extracted in around 1970, and the mines were closed.

The gold-silver deposits around the town host a wide range of interesting minerals including many rare silver species and a range of antimony minerals too.
