The mines unusual name comes from its location, near the KM-3 milepost on the road between Lavrion to Agios Konstantinos.

Mindat lists over 70 mineral species from the site, including one for which it is the type locality – Nickeltsumcorite.

The age of these workings is unknown, but the area around Lavrion is famous for its ancient silver mining, going back to around 3200BC – this mine is likely not to be that old, but no assumptions can be made for its actual age.

Nickel was not isolated until 1751, but there are iron, copper, and lead minerals present at this site too.
