Haapaluoma was mined for feldspar between 1961 and 1997, and is now abandoned and flooded. The quarry is used as a diving site with a sunken boat, and can be accessed by the public via the tourist information department nearby.
The quarry produced a range of specimens including beryl, elbaite, fluorapatite, muscovite, schorl, spessartine, kunzite and rubellite.
Some of the tourmaline species from the site are really rather gemmy.
