Camp dels Ninots

Caldes de Malavella, Selva, Girona, Catalonia, Spain

Camp dels Ninots is an unusual locale producing menilite opal.

The name of the locale roughly translates to ‘camp of the puppets’ or ‘field of the dolls’. I would imagine the menilite and folk tales around it led to the name of the site.

As far as I’m aware the site is only known for menilite; Mindat does list a couple of minerals but with no other photographs.

Nearby locations have revealed excellent quality fossils and mineralised bones from the upper Pliocene which are, to be honest, more interesting than the mineral specimens from the site – providing an excellent cross section of an ecosystem including amphibians, bovines, turtles, frogs, fish, rodents – as well as fruits, leaves, and trunks of trees and bushes.
