Atrevida Mine

Bosc de Poblet, Vimbodí i Poblet, Conca de Barberà, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain

Atrevida Mine is a famous locale for collectors, based around an old mine formerly exploiting baryte deposits.

Mindat lists 66 mineral species from the site, including some that are rather rare – hessite, pearceite, metazeunerite-kahlerite.

It appears the site is still at least somewhat accessible, with cavers and mineral hunters still entering for exploration and possibly collection.

The surrounding area is somewhat contaminated by mining works, with the lode worked containing various toxic elements – barium, fluorine, lead, zinc, arsenic, nickel, and silver. Numerous radioactive minerals are found at the site too.

The mine was worked primarily for baryte, opening in 1870 and eventually closing in 1990.
