Almadén Mine
Almadén, Ciudad Real, Castile-La Mancha, Spain
Almadén Mine is a mercury mine exploiting the worlds largest mercury deposit.
Crystalline cinnabar from the site is well known amongst collectors for its colour and lustre, producing some very aesthetic specimens.
Most of the ore, of course, is not of specimen quality – ‘massive’ specimens can be found online with relative ease.
There is a tourist attraction covering the mining of the area with a museum and guided tours of the mine available – Minas de Almaden parque minero.
