Metal casting is a popular method of working with metals, both as a hobby and as part of industry.

Lower temperature metals such as tin, lead, bismuth and pewter can be cast with ease using minimal equipment – while higher temperature metals such as silver, gold, brass and steel are perhaps best left to professionals – although there are many jewellers who cast silver daily!

There are a few different methods of metal casting, all with their own advantages and disadvantages – lost wax casting, lost foam casting, direct pours, centrifugal casting, and sand casting. Sand casting or lost wax casting are probably the most common methods used, and the easiest to get into both in terms of skill and equipment.
