Intaglios and Inlays

Intaglio stones have been carved with a design in relief, to create a recessed area. In some cases, this recess is filled with enamel or another material.

The term intaglio comes from the Italian word intagliare which means ‘to carve’. Italian history is full of quality intaglio pieces, dating back to the Romans and possibly before.
