Rainbow Obsidian from La Revoltosa Mine, San Andrés, Magdalena Municipality, Jalisco, Mexico

Rainbow Obsidian specimens from La Revoltosa Mine, a working which produces much of the worlds fine quality 'rainbow' Obsidian.

Rainbow Obsidian displays an iridescent play of colour due to micro bubbles under its surface. These colours can be anywhere from quite mild to extremely bright and striking; they range from golds and silvers to greens, blues, oranges. The best material will, of course, show a bright range of colours.

These pieces are, sadly, not the best grade material. The best material is typically cut and polished to maximise the colour.

Under a bright light you can see a small colour change from black to a blue-grey.

Please be aware, these are naturally occurring pieces of Obsidian, a volcanic glass - some edges may be sharp and if the material is broken, the fresh edges can be razor sharp - Obsidian has been used as scalpels!
