Fly Fossils

While we have probably all seen a fly trapped in Amber or Copal, these fossils are far less common. They are the genuine remains of insects turned to stone.

Soft tissues generally do not fossilise – it is usually the hard bones, teeth, etc that tend to fossilise. For these soft tissues to fossilise, very specific events must have taken place – in all likelihood covered by a very fine silty mud soon after death, or as a cause of death, before being covered in layers of sediment.

I’ll be honest – I am nowhere near knowledgable enough to identify these insects, although it should be possible. They are all from the order Diptera and found in the Yixian Formation of North China.

Current stock includes

  • #1 – matrix measuring around 65x40MM, a single well preserved fly fossil. Fly fossil itself measures around 15MM.
  • #2 – matrix measuring around 50x40MM, a single well preserved fly fossil with several potential fragments of others. Fly fossil itself measures around 15x10MM.
  • #3 – matrix measuring around 60x50MM, a single well preserved fly fossil with several potential fragments of others. Fly fossil itself measures around 10x10MM.
  • #4 – matrix measuring around 60x41MM, a single well preserved fly fossil measuring around 10x7MM.
  • #5 – matrix measuring around 62x55MM, a well preserved fly fossil with numerous other fragments. Fly fossil itself measures around 10MM long. This specimen has one large ‘wing like’ fossil on the rear.
  • #6 – matrix measuring around 55x54MM, a single well preserved fly with several other potential fragments. Fly fossil itself measures around 12MM long.
  • #7 – matrix measuring around 57x50MM, a well preserved fly with at least one other fragment. Fly fossil itself measures around 6x6MM.
